Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR)
Monice Fiume is the Interim Deputy Director at the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR). Prior to being named Interim Deputy Director this past June, Monice held numerous positions within CIR. She first joined CIR in 1989 as a Scientific Analyst/Writer, and her primary responsibility was to prepare technical reports for presentation to the CIR Expert Panel for use in determining the safety of cosmetic ingredients. In 2004, Monice’s responsibilities were expanded, and as a Scientific Analyst/Report Management Coordinator she monitored the preparation and progress of all CIR reports, while maintaining her own writing responsibilities. Monice left CIR in 2000 in order to focus on raising her children. She then returned part-time in 2007 as a technical editor, rejoined CIR full-time in 2010 as a Senior Scientific Analyst/Writer, was promoted to Assistant Director/Senior Scientific Analyst in 2014, and then to Interim Deputy Director in 2017.
During her tenure at CIR, she has written more than 70 safety assessments on over 1700 cosmetic ingredients. Before coming to CIR, she worked as a technician at a contract testing laboratory in Pennsylvania.
Monice earned a B.S. in biology from the Penn State University, and an M.B.A. from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She and her husband, Jim, have two boys - Jimmy, 20, and Matthew, 18. The Fiume family resides in Ashburn, VA.
